Textures forgotten: Bucharest interwar

Bucharest has a large number of modernist heritage buildings that are part of the city's identity. Modernist architecture big production was due to the 1918 Union after World War I, followed by a period of peace and economic and cultural growth. Bucharest became at that time the capital of a unified Romanians and this was reflected in its rapid development in the new urbanism and architecture in new production.

The project aims

After nearly 100 years of making these coatings, modernist heritage built in Bucharest suffering from negligence and improper repair interventions and, in most cases, eliminates the delicate details and beautiful facades. These buildings are more vulnerable because of high seismic risk of Bucharest and require special attention in the repair process.

Highlighting the aesthetic and historical those plasters original and documenting techniques and recipes of mortar necessary to achieve them, we aim to better understand this architectural feature and we want to encourage informed decisions when it comes to maintenance, conservation and repair of modernist buildings.

The project has the following stages:

1. research library, which is documenting recipes plaster mortars wars and their way of application - specific Romanian and techniques compared with the same period in other countries;

2. photographic inventory on the ground, followed by a series of practical workshops for testing recipes documented and application techniques on samples of 1x1m to preserve and revitalize old techniques / technologies;

3. The debate on the techniques tested alongside the project team will be invited specialists and builders interested in the subject to discuss the operational conclusions of the workshops - recipes, application procedures, materials available today - and will put discussion and possible solutions to improve the technology to meet current standards and coexistence technologies historical new market requirements;

4. a guide that will identify and inventory the main types of plasters interwar Bucharest, with specific compositions, the methods of application, the most common forms of degradation and will include recommendations for repair and maintenance, useful both specialists, and owners modernist heritage buildings (built between 1918-1940);
